The code is issued by the Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce, and needs no filing or renewal. IEC is required by importers to clear customs and shipment, and to transfer money to foreign banks. Exporters require their IEC to send shipments and receive money from foreign banks. In short, no importer/exporter can operate in India without getting the IEC.
Any type of business registration: sole proprietorship, partnership, private limited companies, charitable organizations dealing with import and exports of goods can register for import-export code, irrespective of the size. However, an IEC is not required for import/export of goods for personal use, which are not connected with trade, manufacture, or agriculture. There is no need for a business set up.

What is the validity of IE Code?
Import Export Code is permanent and is valid for lifetime, so there is no need for renewal or update, it lasts until the business ceases to exist or the registration is surrendered.
Is it necessary to obtain an Import Export Code (IEC) for Import of goods?
It is necessary to obtain IEC code for Import. However, certain categories of importers are exempted from obtaining the Import Export Code. The details regarding the categories of importers exempted from obtaining IEC may be seen at Para 2.8 of Handbook of Procedure, Vol.-I on the DGFT website.
Is there a separate code required for Import and Export?
No separate Code is required for Import and export and the same IEC can be used for both. Many people have the wrong Idea that a separate IEC code is required, but it is not true. Only one registration is required which is mandatory for the import and export and the same IEC code can be used while importing as well as exporting. There are many benefits to obtaining IEC code for businesses.
